- About This Release
-
- Hypercosm3D Player 1.3 is a major release with a lot of new
- features. In addition to supporting new applets with new and
- richer functionality, the latest version includes Hypercosm's
- new content creation model. In exchange for displaying
- advertisements while applets load, we can give our development
- tools away for free, and even pay people who write their own
- Hypercosm applets or who host applets on their web sites.
- Complete information about how this works can be found on our
- web site.
-
- Details on the many other changes to the Player are listed below
- in the Version History section.
-
- Hypercosm3D Player 1.3.2 contains minor fixes to Versions 1.3
- and 1.3.1. It is recommended for all users.
-
- Hypercosm expects to periodically release updates to the Player.
- Please watch our web site, http://www.hypercosm.com, for new
- releases and other important announcements. You may also
- subscribe to our announcements mailing list by sending email to
- announce-request@hypercosm.com with the word "subscribe" as the
- subject. Additional Hypercosm mailing lists and instructions can

- Version History
-
- Version 1.3.2, 19 April 2000
- - Several miscellaneous bugs throughout the Player have been fixed,
- including reporting the position of sounds that are playing, drawing
- text and selecting font sizes, and drawing raytraced images.
- - Support for Targa image files has been removed. JPEG, PNG, and GIF
- files are recommended instead.
- - When an applet recommends a newer version of the Player than is
- currently installed, the Player will put up a dialog box recommending
- that you upgrade. It now does this once per day, instead of once every
- time the applet is loaded.
- - More cards have been added to the video card database.
-
- Version 1.3.1, 8 March 2000
- - Several problems, such as with image loading, have been fixed.
-
- Version 1.3, 1 March 2000
- - We display advertisements while applets load. This allows us to give
- our development tools away for free, and to pay content authors for
- using our technology. See our web site for more information. As a
- consequence of the new content creation model, the player requires
- javascript to be enabled before it displays any content.
- - We support many new OMAR language features. See the ReleaseNotes.txt
- file that comes with Hypercosm Studio for more details.
- - On the Windows operating system, the player comes with a video card
- database which allows it to draw using the best method for your system.
- This should make the player much more stable.
- - We have a new software graphics engine that we use on machines without
- 3D video cards. The new software rasterizer supports texturing.
- - A new sound infrastructure has been added, which supports playing WAV
- and MP3 files, and streaming long sounds from disk.
- - Detection of corrupt or truncated applet files has been improved, and
- a problem for Netscape users where incompletely downloaded applets
- were being reported as "expired" has been fixed.
- - Bug fixes and optimizations were made throughout the player.
- - We cleaned up our error message formatting and improved the wording of
- some of the error messages.
- - On the Macintosh, out of memory conditions are no longer reported as
- "C++ Exceptions."
- - On the Macintosh, we no longer paint the wrong textures on objects, or
- play the wrong sounds.
- - The installation process on Windows has been improved, and the player
- now comes with a web page that will verify the installation.
-
- Version 1.2, 16 December 1999
- - Better graphics rendering performance
- - Reduced memory footprint.
- - Fixes for several memory leaks
- - Improved Internet Explorer support.
- - We now support 8 bit video modes completely, including OpenGL
- software and hardware.
- - Due to stability problems with multi-windowed applets, OpenGL
- support has been disabled for Windows 95, original and OSR2.
- - Added crash detection. The player will now ask you if you'd
- like to switch to using the safer (but slower) software-only
- rasterizer if it detects that it has previously crashed when
- using a hardware-accelerated driver.
- - Improved texture-loading performance.
- - Hypercosm Logo now displays the player version.
- - The player no longer depends on the Microsoft OLE components,
- for greater compatibility with older computers.
-
- Build 842, 1 November 1999
- - Enabled texturing for the OpenGL Software rasterizer.
-
- Build 841, 20 September 1999
- Performance enhancements, bug fixes, and new applet feature support:
- - Better graphics rendering performance
- - Better driver stability, including a fix to a crashing bug
- when the web browser window was closed
- - Improved OpenGL stability
- - Fixes for several memory leaks
- - A fix for a problem with a series of graphics chips from
- 3Dlabs Inc.
- - Support for new applet features including better
- interactivity
- - Support for DirectSound and better applet sound capabilities
-
- Build 840, 6 August 1999
- - Minor patch to improve compatibility with older HTML web pages.
-
- Build 839, 2 August 1999
- - First official release of the Player, including support for
- the HCVM applet file format.
